Southern Lapland - Mixture of Urban & Wilderness

When compared to the other parts of Lapland, Southern Lapland is rather flat. The southern and western areas of the region are maritime with rivers and rich flora. The western parts of the region are bordered by the Northern Gulf of Bothnia, boasting with beautiful Bothnian Bay National Park.

Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland and the Official Hometown of Santa Claus, offers a more urban location for filming. Rovaniemi is also the home of European Union's northernmost university, University of Lapland, where future film, design and media professionals are educated in the Faculty of Arts and Design. This could provide a fruitful source for filming productions.

The strongest asset of Rovaniemi area is the proximity of pure nature in the surrounding wilderness. It takes only 10-15 minutes from the centre of the town to get into the forest.

Rovaniemi International Airport (EFRO) is the biggest and most advanced airport in Lapland. It has a 3 km runway making it capable to receive very large planes, and a CAT 2 ILS keeping the airport landable even in difficult conditions. Flight time from Helsinki is 1 hour 20 minutes.

Kemi & Tornio

Kemi and Tornio are small towns by the Gulf of Bothnia, both with approximately 22.500 inhabitants. They are located quite close to one another and therefore have the airport and the university of applied sciences in common.

Tornio, located near the border of Sweden, has almost merged with the neighboring Swedish town of Haparanda. There is only a river between these towns and people can drive across the border any time, without stopping for passport control. This is due to a handy agreement made years before the Schengen: citizens of the Nordic countries may travel to another Nordic country without a travel document. Identity must be proven on request of course, but for example driving licence is sufficient for this purpose.

Kemi-Tornio Airport (EFKE) is a bit smaller than Rovaniemi, but fully operational throughout the year too. Flight time from Helsinki is 1 hour 30 minutes.

Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences offers education in the field of Cultural and Media Arts, creating new and enthusiastic people to work within the film industry.
