Transportation

The Finnish road network extends from the southernmost to the northernmost point of the country. The well maintained network offers a functional method for transporting goods and people both in the summer as well as in the winter. Air traffic is operational throughout the year.

Air Transport

There are five airports in Lapland that have the capacity to take passenger planes: Enontekiö, Ivalo, Kemi-Tornio, Kittilä, and Rovaniemi. Flight times from Helsinki to each airport are tabulated below.

The main airline operators operating in Finland are Air Baltic, Norwegian Air, Finnair and Blue1.

Road Transport & Driving Regulations

Minimum age for driving is 18. Driving in Finland requires a valid driving licence. Finland has right-hand traffic. Headlights must be used at all times and seatbelts are compulsory both in the front and the rear. From December to February studded tires are required and the speed limits are lower than in the summer. Driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances is prohibited. The DUI legal limit is 0.05 % alcohol concentration.

Driving licences issued in another EU or EEA country and interim driving licences issued in the Nordic countries entitle the holder to drive motor vehicles in Finland equivalent to those indicated on the non-Finnish licence. The driver must be at least 18 years old. The right to drive is valid regardless of whether the person is in Finland as a tourist or residing permanently.

An international driving licence will be useful if you intend to travel to, for example, Latvia or Russia or countries outside Europe. An international driving licence, however, does not entitle you to drive a vehicle in Finland. Nor are driving licences issued outside EU or EEA countries recognized in Finland.

Service Stations

Almost every gas station in Finland operates on the principle of self-service. Fuel can be paid with cash or card.

Busses

Busses / Coaches run regularly and are operated by Matkahuolto.

Car Rental

There are a number of international car rental companies operating throughout Finland including Lapland, such as Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget and Scandia Rent.

Trains

Trains are operated by VR throughout the year. Both day trains and night trains with sleeper cabins are available.
